Aiken-Rhett House Museum

The Aiken-Rhett House was originally built in 1820 and remained in the family until 1975. In 1975, the Aiken-Rhett family decided to donate the home to the Charleston Museum. The Charleston Museum later bought the property, which is now managed by The Historic Charleston Foundation. The museum's new owners chose a conservative approach to interpretation and have left much of the original fabric. Tours of the Aiken-Rhett House are available daily.
The Aiken-Rhett House is a historic home located just north of downtown Charleston. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Aiken-Rhett is the best preserved early nineteenth-century townhouse in Charleston. The Aiken-Rhett was built by John Robinson, a well-to-do merchant who lost several of his ships to French shipwrecks in 1825. His widow and son also built the house after the French burned down many of her ships.
The Aiken-Rhett House is not to be confused with the William Aiken House. The Aiken-Rhett House was donated to the Charleston Museum in 1975 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
